The Story Behind the Movement

Founded by Brooklyn-born choreographer, educator, and interdisciplinary artist Leslie A. Yancey, Yancey Dance Theatre is a multidisciplinary company rooted in the belief that movement has the power to inspire, connect, and transform.

Leslie’s creative journey began in New York and took her across continents, from the stages of Paris with the Calck Hook Dance Theatre Company to performances and teaching engagements throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. In 1990, she founded Yanceydance-Theatre, a company she built around a bold artistic vision that weaves together dance, film, voice, and music into a singular and powerful experience. Her choreographic works earned critical acclaim in New York City, with recognition from The New York Times, and were presented at leading venues through prestigious grants and residencies including Yaddo, the Harkness Choreographers Space Grant, and the Joyce Soho Salon Project Series.

Beyond the stage, Leslie has devoted over 35 years to arts education, bringing creative movement into schools and communities across New York, Europe, New Mexico, Africa, and now Montana. Drawing from her deep training in Modern Dance, West African and Haitian dance, theater, and performance art, she now teaches Afrofusion Dance, a grounded, expressive, and inclusive style that truly welcomes all bodies and all abilities.

Yancey Dance Theatre is more than a company. It is a living, moving celebration of culture, artistry, and the human spirit.
